DELIGHTING IN THE SKIN I’M IN: SUMMER WOES WEEK 1 UPDATE

It’s been a week since I started a new skin regimen to combat large pores, increased oil production and acne due to the summer heat.

My original plan was as follows:

Night time

  1. Remove cc cream with Neutrogena’s oil free makeup wipes
  2. Wash face with  Cetaphil’s oil control foam wash
  3. Apply Olay’s ultimate eye cream
  4. Apply Neutrogena’s Rapid clear 10% benzoyl peroxide spot gel to entire face to prevent future breakouts
  5. Apply Neutrogena’s rapid tone repair moisturizer
  6. Sleep with windows open and fans on to keep the room cool

Morning

  1. Rinse face with cool water
  2. Apply L’Oreal Red Algae Pure-Clay Mask every other day
  3. Spot treat pimples with Neutrogena’s Rapid clear 10% benzoyl peroxide spot gel
  4. Apply Olay’s ultimate eye cream
  5. Apply Cetaphil’s oil control sunscreen/moisturizer
  6. Apply Clinique’s CC cream
  7. Spend day with 2 fans on
  8. Drink lots of water

Well that was the plan but this is how the week went down instead.

Day 1: 10% benzyol peroxide disaster 😦

I started using the face wash, sunscreen moisturizer and 10% Benzoyl peroxide. I didn’t see much difference in my face yet. Instead, the benzoyl peroxide was very irritating to my skin. I woke up with a swollen, tight and itchy face. I soothed my face by applying some I’m Real Aloe Mask from TONYMOLY.

My 2 fans were not enough to keep my room cool so I decided to study at the nearby coffee shops. That night I used a milder benzoyl perioxide from Clinique instead. I barely drank any water. I tried to sleep with the windows open but bugs kept on coming in despite the nets. I realized that I had to buy an AC after all.

Day 2: Pores and heat bumps be gone!!!

The Clinique benzoyl peroxide didn’t swell up my face but my face was still burning. I could see a difference in the size of my pores and the heat bumps seemed less, but I wasn’t totally sure. I didn’t like that I still had several pimples along my jaw line. I deciced to add Ziana as spot treatment. Ziana is a prescription strength acne medication. Why is it so hard to drink water?

Day 3: Ziana to the rescue!

Only one pimple was left on my jaw after using Ziana the night before. My period was due soon and usually all of my pimples disappear once I start bleeding but my pre-menstrual acne had taken a new dimension during this hot weather so I was glad that Ziana was helping me along. I tried the L’Oreal Red Algae Pure-Clay Mask for the first time. Took before and after pictures like the nice lady at Walgreens told me. I’m not sure which product is working and which one isn’t. My pores are looking great. I go out feeling so confident with only one pimple in sight. I’m elated on my way to the cafe. That night I finally buckled down and bought a portable AC. I applied Clinique’s CC cream to go out. When I’m applying, it I feel like it’s not the right shade. It seems to leave my skin looking ashy but not terrible. I managed to drink 5 cups of water which I think is more than enough for someone my size. I’d drown or spend the day in the bathroom if I drank 8 cups. I applied Ziana again at night hoping that it will take care of that last pimple.

Day 4: Aaaah the luxury of having AC!

My face is pimple free. My skin still burns when I apply products. I put the AC together. The one I bought is the Hisense 10K BTU which is supposed to be enough for a 300 sq ft place. It’s working well enough that I don’t feel like leaving my apartment. I applied the cc cream, still uneasy with the shade, but I can tolerate it until I find something better. I go grocery shopping feeling like a goddess. Doing great with the water drinking. I decided to just stop using benzoyl peroxide for now because the burning just won’t go away.

Day 5: I’m in love with that Red Algae stuff!

L'Oreal Paris Skin Care Pure Clay Mask Exfoliate And Refine Pores, 1.7 Ounce

I applied the red algae mask again. I felt so happy rinsing it off using a circular motion to exfoliate my skin. I felt like I was doing something great for my skin. My skin looks so good. Heat bumps are gone. Pores are tiny. Pimples are gone. Then my period started and so did the cramps. At least I’m loving my face. I’m not sure which of the products is key in all of this. But I’m thinking it’s mainly air conditioning and Ziana. But since I’m still not sure I’m just gonna keep on using everything. This facial regimen does not seem tedious to me for some reason, although it involves more products and time compared to my winter routine. I  think it’s because I’m changing the way I think about face care.

Day 6: From oily face to dry face! Yikes!

I noticed that my face was looking more dry that I’d like it to. I know that this might backfire and cause my face to produce more oil but I’m not sure which of the products to substract. I need to wash my face and I need a sunscreen. I love using the mask. I need the night moisturizer to even out my skin tone. I feel like subtracting any of these things might wreak havoc on my routine. I think I’ll just wait and see. I’m scared but boy does this dry skin look fabulous!

Day 7: Pimples resurfacing!

My face is no longer burning. This is my last time applying the red algae mask. I don’t know what it is about this mask but just applying it makes me feel happy. I can’t really tell if it’s doing anything for my skin, but I love it. I noticed some new pimples forming on my jaw line. While Ziana is great for spot treatment, it’s not advisable to use it on the entire face. I’m contemplating re-adding benzoyl peroxide to my routine.

Day 8: Time to switch gears!

This is the end of week 1. It went much better than I thought it would. The one week trial with the red algae mask went well. I wish I could keep on using it but I need to try the green Eucalyptus mask to purify and mattify for one week to see which mask works best for my skin. Unfortunately, my skin looks even dryer today. Even after applying the moisturizer and the cc cream I could still notice the dryness. So, I’m a little worried about using a mask that “purifies and mattifies”. But it is what it is. I have to try things in order to know what’s best for my skin. Maybe I’ll end up doing multimasking with these products instead. This is my first night back on Clinique’s acne treatment. Hopefully, my face won’t be burning in the morning and if it does, I’ll use it every other day instead. I read about the Korean 10 step skin care and I’m dying to try it. But I will try to pace myself.

So the plan for week 2 will be:

Night time

  1. Remove cc cream with Neutrogena’s oil free makeup wipes
  2. Wash face with  Cetaphil’s oil control foam wash
  3. Apply Olay’s ultimate eye cream
  4. Apply Clinique’s acne treatment  to entire face to prevent future breakouts
  5. Apply Neutrogena’s rapid tone repair moisturizer
  6. Sleep with AC on.

Morning

  1. Rinse face with cool water
  2. Apply L’Oreal’s Eucalyptus mask to purify and mattify every other day
  3. Spot treat pimples with Ziana
  4. Apply Olay’s ultimate eye cream
  5. Apply Cetaphil’s oil control sunscreen/moisturizer
  6. Apply Clinique’s CC cream
  7. Spend day in an air conditioned room
  8. Drink lots of water and daydream about the Korean 10 step skin regimen
